Chapter 5 Notes (By Mrs. Kretschmer)

Chapter 4 Notes (By Mrs. Kretschmer)

From Farm To Table

In chapter 4 we are looking at the processes involved in getting "food and fiber" from farm to table. Today (May 30th) in class we took notes and watched a series of short video clips about some ways that foods are produced, processed, packaged and transported. Follow the link below and view the videos. If you were absent today, you should watch these! The items in the videos include: corn, tomatoes, tofu, cheese, chocolate, bread, milk, and dried fruit. Yum!

History's Harvest Video

Watch the video that shows how food has been made for thousands of years. Agricultural practices have changed due to the "green revolution" and have made it easier and cheaper to grow food. Countries that are using the new techniques are now being able to feed themselves and move away from subsitstance farming. The video also addresses the future of genetic engineering of crops to make them resistant to pests and disease. This will reduce the amount of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers needed in the future!
We watched this video in class on THURSDAY May 29. If you were absent, you need to watch it!

See me if you need a copy of the video quiz to complete as you watch!

Catching Up

Well, we are ALMOST done with our exciting week on Lake Wallenpaupack. By now you should have had an opportunity to do a whole bunch of things that relate to what we are learning in the classroom. You have taken soil samples, checked pH of soil and lake water, "fished" for plankton and looked at it under the microscope, looked for macroinvertebrates in the stream, toured the watershed and the hydroelectric plant, and some of you even got to chase a chicken with Mr. Anke! We have a few more things to finish up tomorrow and Monday. We will be watching a presentation on different ways of collecting fish for monitoring ecosystems. We will also be taking a tour of our water treatment plant (if it is not pouring out). On Monday, we will have two speakers who will talk to us about ground water and contamination.
Please be sure that you have done all of your homework, and all of your fild activities. You need to have that packet complete to study for your quiz, which will be next Tuesday. Be sure to start reviewing vocabulary and everything that you have learned this week. STUDY OVER THE WEEKEND!
